During the government of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán became a kind of laboratory for the cultural programs of the new regime. In this sense, Jiquilpan was part of a project in which resources were poured, both economic and cultural, in order to turn the president's homeland into a new tourist destination. With the sponsorship of Cárdenas, artists and architects such as José Clemente Orozco, Roberto de la Cueva del Río, Guillermo Ruíz and Alberto Leduc were hired to transform Jiquilpan into a model of regional architecture and painting that would offer the visitor an experience of the “typical México”, while turning it into a national political center.
